Celebrating the Graduation of Plastic Process Technician Apprenticeship Cohort 6
The Keystone Community Education Council recently celebrated an important workforce milestone with the graduation of Plastic Process Technician Apprenticeship Cohort 6. This achievement highlights the continued success of a program designed to strengthen manufacturing talent pipelines across our region.
Supported through the PA Smart Pathways to Innovation grant, this cohort brought together apprentices from regional manufacturers for a comprehensive training experience focused on real-world skills and long-term career growth.
A Hands-On Approach to Advanced Manufacturing Training
The Plastic Process Technician Apprenticeship program combines classroom instruction, hands-on lab work, online learning, and extensive on-the-job training. In total, apprentices complete more than 340 hours of technical instruction along with 4,000 hours of on-the-job experience.
Throughout the program, participants build expertise in:
- Injection molding processes
- Mold design and maintenance
- Quality systems and inspection
- Workplace safety practices
- Troubleshooting and process improvement
This well-rounded approach ensures graduates are not only knowledgeable, but fully prepared to contribute immediately in high-demand manufacturing roles.
Strong Partnerships Driving Real Results
Cohort 6 reflects the power of collaboration between employers and training providers. Participating companies, including Plastek and C&J Industries, played a key role in supporting apprentices throughout the program.
Training partnerships with organizations such as the Advanced Industrial Maintenance (AIM) program, Northern Pennsylvania Regional College, and Commonwealth University helped deliver a high-quality educational experience aligned with industry needs.
During the graduation ceremony, employers shared how the program is already making a measurable impact—helping employees grow their technical abilities, take on new responsibilities, and advance within their organizations.
Creating Career Pathways in Manufacturing
One of the most significant outcomes of the Plastic Process Technician Apprenticeship program is the creation of clear career pathways. Graduates are not only improving their current job performance, but also opening doors to future opportunities in leadership, engineering, quality assurance, and continued education.
This is exactly the type of workforce development the PA Smart initiative was designed to support—connecting individuals with meaningful careers while helping employers build a stronger, more skilled workforce.
Who Should Consider the Program?
The apprenticeship is ideal for:
- Manufacturing employers looking to upskill their workforce
- HR teams seeking structured technical training solutions
- Employees motivated to grow their skills and increase earning potential
Participants should come with a willingness to learn and an interest in advancing their knowledge of injection molding and plastics processing.
