Community College of Allegheny County and Keystone CEC, in partnership with regional experts, are offering an intensive 18-hour course on unmanned aerial vehicles. All students will receive their own model quad-copter training drone with camera, computer flight simulator and workbook which they will be able to keep following completion of the course.

1 laptop with Windows 7 or higher is required.

Interested in learning how to fly small Unmanned Aerial Systems (commonly referred to as drones) for a new career? Or maybe just for fun? Either way, we can help you get started! This course is designed for anyone that wants to fly small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) for fun or as a new career after the FAA opens the skies to commercial use. Students learn to fly, are taught about the different types of flight systems and, most importantly, acquire insight into safe and legal flying practices. Individuals will learn about emerging job opportunities, and companies are exposed to the application and use of this transformative technology in their businesses. Over six 3-hour sessions, our complete overview will help you gain a thorough understanding of sUAS as we cover the following: Indoor hands-on flight practice using a small model quadcopter; Computer simulator training; Different types of sUAS including both multi-rotor & fixed-wing; Flight systems from: DJI (Phantom and Inspire 1), 3D Robotics (Y6), Infinite Jib (custom-built hexacopter with dual controls and first person video); Flight vehicles, radio controllers, components and characteristics; Autonomous flight; Routine maintenance; Uses and applications: Markets, Photos and video, Post-processing, Economic drivers; Safety: Best-practices, Operational risks, Rules of the road; FAA topics: Policies, Lawsuits, Exemptions, How to fly legally now, Preparation for upcoming regulations; Privacy concerns; Insurance
